Mahoney was wounded on D Day June 6, 1944 on Omaha Beach. He was awarded the Silver Star Medal for valor in combat. He retired from the Army as a colonel in 1961. He was a veteran of World War II, Korea and Vietnam and received numerous medal including the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star, Silver Star, Purple Heart with Oak Leaf Cluster, French Croix de Guerre with palm, Belgium Croix de Guerre
